Iedereen kent wel de koekoeksklok - een uurwerk in de vorm van een rijk versierd huisje, met bovenin een deurtje waarachter een koekoek woont. Elk uur zingt die een langer liedje, tot je te elfder ure al beseft dat je tot na middernacht van slapen slechts kunt dromen.
Around in circles with a cuckoo
Everyone knows the cuckoo clock - a clock in the shape of a highly decorated little house, with a little door under the eaves behind which lives a cuckoo. Every hour it sings a slightly longer song, until at the eleventh hour you realise that until after midnight sleep will remain a dream.
Wat bijna niemand weet is dat die koekoeksklokkoekoeken af en toe stiekem hun zolderkamertje verlaten om wat uit te vliegen, en om even weg te zijn van dat eindeloze klokgetik. Uit beroepseer vliegen deze vogeltjes - met een wit buikje, een rood kopje en bruin getekende vleugeltjes - dan altijd in grote of kleinere cirkels, die overeenkomen met de banen van de wijzers van een enorme klok die ze zich op het landschap geprojecteerd voorstellen. De baan van de grote wijzer heet de buitencirkel, en die van de kleine wijzer de binnencirkel.
Hardly anybody knows that every now and then these clock cuckoos sneak out of their little attic for a restorative flight, and for a brief respite from the endless ticking. Out of professional honour these little birds - with a white front, a read head and wings in a brown pattern - always fly along larger or smaller circles. These circles coincide with the trajectories of the hands of a gigantic clock which the birds imagine projected onto the landscape. The trajectory of the hour hand is called the outer circle; the trajectory of the minute hand referred to as the inner circle.
Laatst fluisterde
Kabouter Corneel me toe dat er in het prachtige bossen- en vennengebied bij Oisterwijk zo'n koekoeksklokkoekoek is neergestreken. Ik ging natuurlijk meteen op zoek - maar het vogeltje hield me aardig aan het lijntje!
A while ago
Gnome Corneel revealed that one of these clock cuckoos was spotted in the woods around the beautiful fens near Oisterwijk. Of course I immediately set out to investigate - but the little bird kept me stringing me along!

Aanvankelijk liet de koekoek zich af en toe zien en gelukkig had ik mijn camera paraat. Je kunt het vogeltje dan ook vrij gemakkelijk volgen zoals beschreven onder "De wandeling".
Initially the cuckoo showed itself regularly and fortunately I had my camera with me. You can follow the little bird quite easily as described under "The walk".
Daarna werd het beestje ondeugender. Om de koekoek te volgen, heb je dan kennis nodig van de elementaire eigenschappen van de cirkel, en dien je je navigatieapparatuur goed te beheersen - met name peiling en projectie. Een rekenapparaatje, pen en papier zullen goed van pas komen. Kalibreer je kompas en stel het in op het ware Noorden.
After a while the little animal became rather naughty. To follow the cuckoo you will need knowledge of the basic properties of a circle, and you will need to master you navigation equipment - in particular taking bearings and making projections. A calculator, pen and paper will prove useful. Calibrate your compass and adjust it to true north.
Niet ver van de punten waar gerekend, gepeild en geprojecteerd dient te worden is meestal een mooi gelegen bank te vinden. Voor wie dat wil is er koffie onderweg. Het is niet nodig (en niet toegestaan) om de wandelpaden te verlaten. De cache ligt kort naast een pad en is gemakkelijk te vinden - prikken en wroeten door bladeren en takken is dus niet nodig. Let bij drukte goed op voor pottenkijkers!
Near locations where you need to calculate, take bearings or make projections, you'll generally find a bench with a lovely view. Coffee is available along the way. It is not necessary (and not allowed) to leave the paths. The cache is hidden close to a path and it is easy to find - there is no need to burrow through leaves and branches. Please be aware of snoopers at busy times!
Als je tenslotte na een mooie wandeling en heel wat gereken de cache vindt, dan dank je de koekoek!
When, eventually, after a wonderful walk and some problem solving, you find the cache, you'll have the cuckoo to thank!
Opdracht 1 - De wandeling
Task 1 - The walk
Ik zag de koekoek voor het eerst bij waypoint S1 waarvan de coördinaten als beginpunt van deze multicache zijn aangegeven. Vlakbij S1 kun je ook parkeren.
I first saw the cuckoo at waypoint S1, the coordinates of which are indicated as the starting point of this multicache. You can park your car very near S1.
De foto's die ik van de koekoek wist te nemen, staan op volgorde onderaan deze tekst. Het vogeltje wilde op elke foto graag met zijn snaveltje de richting aangeven die je moet volgen, maar na zoveel uren in het hokje van het klokje had het een beetje een stijf nekje gekregen. Daarom heeft het waar nodig zo geposeerd dat het pad dat je moet volgen op de foto goed te zien is. Soms zie je op de foto ook een koekoeksklok. Als die klok twee wijzers heeft, bevind je je op de buitencirkel. Als de klok slechts één wijzer heeft, sta je op de binnencirkel. Bij de klok die 9:58 aangeeft, bevind je je in vogelvlucht op 435 meter vanaf het beginpunt S1.
The photos which I managed to take are shown in order at the bottom of this text. In each of the images the little bird wanted to point its beak in the direction for you to follow, but after so many hours in the attic of the cuckoo clock it had a slightly stiff neck. Where relevant the pictures clearly show the path which you need to take. Some of the photos show a cuckoo clock. If this clock has two hands you are on the outer circle. If the clock has only one hand you're on the inner circle. The clock which indicates 9:58 is 435 metres away from the starting point S1 as the cuckoo flies.
Het is verstandig om waypoints te maken van alle plaatsen waar klokken hangen, en om te noteren waar je kon zien hoe laat het was - anders weet je straks niet meer waar de klepel hangt.
It is advisable to make waypoints of all locations where clocks were pictured, and to take note what time it was there - you'll need all this information later on!
Opdracht 2 - Het middelpunt
Task 2 - The centre
Na ongeveer 1200 meter wandelen kiekte ik de koekoek op een klok die 10:08 aangaf. Als toegift toont de foto weer duidelijk een pad dat je kunt volgen om deze opdracht te beginnen. "Tot straks, bij het middelpunt van de wijzerplaat!", piepte de koekoek, en fladderde lachend uit het gezicht.
After a walk of about 1200 metres I pictured the cuckoo on a clock which indicated 10:08. As a bonus the photo clearly shows a path you could follow to start this task. "See you in a minute, at the centre of the dial!", the cuckoo squeaked, and, laughing, fluttered out if sight.
Je bent wandelendeweg ook langs een klok gekomen die 9:58 aangeeft. Daarmee heb je voldoende gegevens verzameld om te bepalen waar het middelpunt van binnen- en buitencirkel zich bevindt. Je kunt het via de wandelpaden bereiken - en het ziet er uit zoals op de volgende foto.
You also walked past a clock on which it was 9:58. All in all you now have enough information to determine where the centre of inner and outer circle is located. You can reach it via the paths - and it looks like in the picture below.
Opdracht 3 - Denk je de koekoek!
Task 3 - Cuckoo thinking!
Vertrek vanuit het middelpunt in de richting 230° tot je een punt bereikt dat gelegen is op de binnencirkel. Noem dat punt P. De onderstaande foto is er genomen.
Leave from the centre in a direction of 230° until you reach a point located on the inner circle. Call this point P. The following picture was taken there.
Vlakbij P staat een paaltje dat wandelroutes aangeeft van Het Groene Woud. Op de vier zijden van dit paaltje vind je bordjes met het nummer van het knooppunt ter plaatse en met nummers die verwijzen naar knooppunten verderop (in gele driehoekjes). Tel alle nummers in gele driehoekjes bij elkaar op, behalve het nummer dat slechts één keer voorkomt. Vermeerder het totaal met het aantal bordjes waarop nummers in gele driehoekjes staan. Noem het resultaat D.
Very near P there is a post which indicates walking routes of Het Groene Woud. On each of the four sides of this post you'll find small plaques with the number of the local node ("knooppunt") and numbers which refer to nodes further afield (in yellow triangles). Add up all the numbers in yellow triangles, except the number which appears only once. Increase the total with the number of plaques containing numbers in yellow triangles. Call the resulting total D.
Precies op het tijdstip dat het puntje van de kleine wijzer P passeerde, nam de koekoek een aantal graden verderop plaats op het puntje van de grote wijzer en legde zo een booglengte af van D meter. Daar hipte het vogeltje van de wijzer af om te poseren bij de plaats waar de cache verborgen is.
At the exact time when the tip of the short hand of the clock passed P, the cuckoo hopped onto the tip of the large hand a number of degrees further along and travelled an arc length of D metres. There the little bird hopped off and posed to show the hiding place of the cache.
