This is the first cache in the Obscure Morris Township Preserves Series. (See below for all.)
The 17.4 acres of Jones Woods was acquired by Morris Township through the Open Space Program in 1995. It is a pristine, mature forest tucked away in a corner of the township and abutting Villa Walsh, a beautiful all-girls high school. The forest contains streams (including the bubbling, serene Jones Brook), springs, an 8-acre earth-dammed reservoir (which was put into use as early as the late 1800s), and exceptional wetlands. It is also the location of two large water storage tanks owned by the Southeast Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority. The township sought to acquire the land for use as a wildlife haven, for natural resource protection, and for passive recreation.
In addition to a couple of trails, the Jones Woods Reservoir provides great scenery as well as fishing opportunities. In years past, there was quite an abundance of trout, perch, and largemouth bass, however, overfishing in recent years might have dwindled the supply. Personally, other than various fish, I have seen turtles, frogs, egrets, geese, ducks, deer, and small snakes on the land. At times, roosters crowing can be heard from an adjacent farm.
This cache is located on the path which encircles about 95% of the reservoir. It is one of the most peaceful paths you can find in the area. In order to get to it, you have to hike the trail straight down and maneuver over the small ravine of Jones Brook. Before you get to the crossing, do not turn left when another trail reveals itself, continue straight. It's interesting to note that this little ravine didn't exist before Tropical Storm Irene came through in August of 2011 and carved it out; all you had to do was simply step over the narrow stream. A child should be able to handle this dip in terrain with a bit of assistance from an adult, but please be careful. Once over, you'll circle counter-clockwise around the pond on the trail. Another ravine/stream crossing will be necessary, but there are a number of ways to get across. Please ensure that it's placed back properly. Enjoy the area! And as always, leave something if you take something. Thanks!
