Jones Woods - The Ruins Traditional Cache

The details of the first cache I placed in Jones Woods gives some background on the area. In it, it's mentioned that part of it has been used as a reservoir since the late 1800s. This cache will take you to an interesting remnant related to that which the woods is slowly reclaiming.

After a short hike, not far off the path lie the ruins of a large, circular brick wall edifice. Research dug up that it was probably built and owned by the Morris Aqueduct Company (New Jersey's first water company) around the 1920s or 30s and served as a water storage tank, pumping station and aqueduct. Pipes, which used to channel water down to the ever-growing town of Morristown, can be seen in the wall as well as along the forest floor. Looking at the long-abandoned structure will suggest that it must have been pretty imposing in its heyday when fully intact, as what's left is still pretty imposing today. It's an interesting, albeit obscure, piece of Morristown history languishing in the woods, and combined with my personal belief that abandoned structures in the woods are fascinating, I thought it was an ideal spot for a cache.

When you walk down the initial trail from the road toward the reservoir, turn left when another crosses it. The ruins are off this trail. Enjoy, and be safe!
