Geocache Description:

This is a letterbox cache built and placed to celebrate the Leadbeater's Possum which has been adopted as the mascot for the November 2015 Melbourne MEGA Event in a place significant to the scientific history of Leadbeater's Possum.

Fern’s Letterbox

Letterboxing is an original form of treasure hunting (around before GPS) that used directions & clues instead of coordinates. Letterbox Hybrids are both a letterbox and a geocache. The stamp inside the Letterbox remains in the cache. Geocachers use the stamp to record their visit in their own letterbox journal. Feel free to bring your own stamp to leave in the log or sign your name a little more creatively than usual.

Fern is the mascot for the Melbourne MEGA event to be held at Casey Fields in November 2015. Fern is a Leadbeaters Possum which is the faunal emblem for the state of Victoria. Today they occur in remote pockets of the Great Dividing Range north east of Melbourne.

Fern’s species (Leadbeaters Possum)was scientifically described from a skin collected on the banks of the Bass River, so I felt she needed a letterbox cache here so that her friends and relatives could communicate with her and tell her how things were down here these days. Victoria’s avian emblem, the Helmeted Honeyeater was also found along this river. Neither are resident here any more.

Her friends (geocachers) could leave a stamp for her and log descriptions of their impressions of the area as it is today. Please leave the stamp in the cache so others can enjoy it. It has been specially made for this cache and replacement costs would be prohibitive.

The coordinates given are the starting point to the trail to the cache at the junction of Bass Highway and McKenzie Road, Bass. Follow the road 3.3 km to its junction with McGrath Road. Turn right into McGrath Road and travel 1.1 km to the far end of a bridge over the Bass River. Find a safe park for your vehicle a bit further along the road and walk back to the eastern end of the bridge. Look for Fern's Letterbox cache on the eastern side of the road. Take care getting down off the road.

This is my first cache. I hope people enjoy it.

WARNINGS

This secluded spot is on the banks of the Bass River and some locals scoot along the road at a dangerous pace so park safely off the road, even if you have to walk a bit to GZ, keep an eye and ear out for speedsters and watch the young visitors. Snakes frequent the area, so keep your eyes open. Access to the cache itself can be tricky to get off the road.
