THE FORT LANE
If you ever happend to be walking the central streets of Auckland after the sun decided to take a rest until the following morning you most probably would have come across this particularily red illuminated street, the Fort Lane.
Fort Street, right at the end of the lane, was the first one of the many more to come reclamation projects in Auckland in order to support the growing need for new lands for many flourishing bussines, being maritime trading one the foundation pillars of the economy of the mid 17th century.
Therefore the previous name of the pre-recamation area, the Commerial Bay, nowadays sepulted by the Fort, Customs and Quay Streets.
The picture below shows how Auckland could have looked on the early years, when the first settlers just accomodated to the orography without major alterations. No wharfs, almost no flat lands... The first street heading up the hill (actual Emily place) is the Shortland Street.
Colonial settlements grew in size and bars, red light districts and brothels flourished within them. Men outnumbered women in most settler communities, with 131 males to every 100 females in 1858. Growing numbers of European women responded to a strong demand by men for sexual services. Māori women were less likely to be involved in this work. The top os Queen Street was known (and well, quite still is) for this kind of bussines, but also the central streets sourrounding the first docks, where international sailors would have arrived in much need of companionship, were quite bussy aswell.
For many years Fort Lane was a forgotten little side street, but recent developing projects, with bars, restaurants, etc; have gave it a great new vibe. For that reason David Svensson, a sweedish artist, was commisioned for the Eyelight Lane project, placing this red neon light all along the lane, giving an special new feeling to the area, and a great wink to the oldest bussines in the world.
