This cache is located on the shoreline of one of the drainage ponds in what has been referred to as the Harrison Wetlands. On the surface, the ponds appear to be a water feature in the suburban landscape - some would say a failed one as they're dry most of the time - however they form part of a larger local water management strategy.
The ponds act as catchment during heavy rain periods - they fill, then drain across Harrison, Franklin and Mitchell, ultimately into the Flemington Ponds and Sullivans Creek. Though the Creek is mostly a concrete channel now, it flows south through the grounds of the Australian National University and ultimately into Lake Burley Griffin.
Stormwater runoff from Sullivans Creek is stored in the Flemington Ponds for use as a non-potable irrigation source.
The frogs come out after heavy rain, and it's one of the reasons we like the site so much. You are not, however, looking for a frog. Size precludes swaps or trackables, and please bring your own pen.
