Geocache Description:

At the time of publishing, Atherton did not have any urban caches, so here's one to get started and celebrate the town and some of it's history. This is a BYOP cache & has no room for swaps. Apologies if the coords are a bit sketchy. No plants need be trampled in the finding of this cache, but stealth is essential! Congratulations on FTF to Team Bombas./p>

The township of Atherton started life as a temporary camp for men travelling the Herberton - Port Douglas track in the 1880’s. Mining supplies and timber were hauled along the present day Main Street by bullock teams, in a journey taking several days. The Heritage listed Barron Valley Hotel, erected as a rough shanty, grew into a Cobb & Co way station, general store, post office and pub. The railway arrived in 1903, spelling the end of the coach and pack animal. The opening of the Gillies Highway in 1926, made the area accessible to cars and for the first time it was possible to travel to the Tablelands and back in one day. During the Second World War, up to 150,000 troops were camped around the district prior to being sent to the front and again after their return. After this time, Atherton has become known as the ‘Capital’ of the Tablelands.
