“Werriberri”-The Oaks History #2
This is the second of a series of caches telling the History of The Oaks
William Russell was born on the banks of the Werriberri Creek in 1830 and was named “Werriberri”. Throughout his life he met local landholders such as the Wild’s, Inglis’ and Antill’s. He became The Chief Man of the Gundungurra tribe whose territory included Burragorang, Picton and Katoomba. He died in Camden Cottage Hospital in 1914.
Months prior to his death he wrote the book “My Recollections” which detailed his life.
This is the third crossing of the Werriberri Creek that was established to transport goods to Burragorang Valley. The first being at the bottom of Timothy Lacey’s Lane to the north. The second is at the bottom end of McIntosh Street, and joins the main road near the fire station. This led to the main street of the town. From 1940 to the 1980’s coal trucks travelled this road transporting coal from the valley mines to Glenlee, Narellan and Campbelltown. During heavy rains flooding occurred in the bridge area, resulting in trucks and school buses being prevented from crossing. In the 1990’s the new deviation from the bottom of Mary Street was established.
The cache is a small silver bison tube, log only, pencil required
