Geocache Description:

Pelican - Birthplace of Winton is one of many caches on the Outback Way-finder Trail - the longest Geocache Trail in the world. The Outback Way is one of Australia’s great four wheel drive odysseys. Known as ‘Australia’s Longest Shortcut’, the route runs between Western Australia and Queensland. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Robert Allen, a former police sergeant, left Aramac about 1875 and moved west to the Pelican Waterholes (about 1 600 m west of the town's current site), where he set up a shop and a public house the next year. The heavy rains that same year, however, brought Allen a great deal of woe, and he even "was compelled by floods to remain two days on the wall-plate of his building." When the flooding had abated somewhat, Allen shifted what was left of his business to Winton's current site. Robert Allen is thus held to be the town's founder.

CAUTION! The access to this cache is a gravel and dirt track and not to be attempted in a 2WD vehicle after rain! Any amount of rain will cause it to become slippery and boggy.
