Geocache Description:

Fish Hoek Beach #6: Jager's Walk Multi - West

The cache, a small camo-taped tablet pot, is hidden along the western part of this popular and scenic walk which runs next to the railway along the rocky coastline for some 500m from the southern end of Fish Hoek Beach to Sunny Cove. Jager's Walk, known as 'The Catwalk' by locals, was named after the first mayor of Fish Hoek, Herman Scott Jager. The Catwalk is wheelchair accessible, but the seaward side mostly has no guard rail, so caution must be exercised.

The cache location is fully exposed, so be patient and carefully time your movements to cater for muggles who will always be passing by along the Walk, use suitable stealth tactics when retrieving and replacing the cache - and ensure the cache is carefully replaced properly concealed . . . thanks! In terms of the number of muggles, particularly during fine weather, at weekends and in high season, the best time to do this cache is early morning or late afternoon when there will be fewer muggles around.

There are a numerous brightly coloured benches along the Catwalk for folks to relax and admire the view, most with plaques to the memory of loved ones - several of these are used for the Steps of this multi.

During the summer months between 08h00-16h00 there is a small fee to park at the large beach parking area or you can park outside and walk onto the beach through the main entrance or one of several pedestrian entrances along the main Simon's Town road. At all other times you can drive in and park at no cost. The beach also has public toilets, a restaurant and a children's playground.

To access the cache:

The cache can be either done in combination with GC77ZRD: JWM#2-East from the start of the Walk at the southern end of Fish Hoek beach (in which case the Step sequence would be 6-5-2-1-3-4 or from - ideally the nearest - one of the several pedestrian access tunnels which pass under the rail line.

For the latter, park at or near the off-road parking area @ S34 8.545 E18 26.026 and locate the beach access steps about 50m to the south-east.

Step 1: At the top of the access steps @ S34 8.560 E18 26.056 there is an inscription carved into the concrete with a date (17-8-40) and a two-part name. The number of letters in each part of this name = A

Step 2: Move a short distance to S34 8.559 E18 26.072 the location of a bench adopted by a Mexican couple. The alphanumeric value (A=1, B=2, C=3 etc) of the first letter of their 11-letter town = B.

Step 3: Proceed a little way to S34 8.571 E18 26.092, where you will find a low yellow-painted concrete bench with a plaque showing that this is the sitting place of a sea creature with C letters in its name.

Update 21/3/24: it seems this has been painted over - it was a mermaid!

Step 4: Now continue to S34 8.580 E18 26.105 the location of the bench dedicated to the dearly loved Francois Blom who is described in D ways.

Step 5: Time to retrace your steps and beyond to S34 8.542 E18 26.044 where you will find a bench made from recycled plastic. The 7th digit of the 10 digit mobile number (ie. not starting 021) of the bench-maker = E

Step 6: Onwards a short distance to S34 8.522 E18 26.007 the location of a detailed information board on Marine Protection illustrated by Richard M... The number of letters in his (Scottish) surname = F.

On the same board, the number of people (heads) with something to say about marine protection = G.

A Marine Protected Area is described as a ****** overflowing with abundant marine life. This same object is shown in the large central illustration. The alphanumeric value of the 1st letter of this object = H
