Geocache Description:

Birthplace of Flag Day

Stony Hill School

Waubeka, Wisconsin

Flag Day is celebrated on June 14 in the United States. It commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. It has been recognized nationally but is not an official federal holiday, and it is a state holiday in Pennslyvania and New York.

There are many competing stories about the origin or first celebration of Flag Day. One of these is the celebration at Stony Hill School in Waubeka, Wisconsin on June 14, 1885. On that day, 19-year old school teacher Bernard J. Cigrand had his students write essays about the flag.

Cigrand went on to become a dentist in Illinois and pushed for the recognition of Flag Day as a holiday for 30 years. Finally, in 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a proclamation that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. Because of his efforts in establishing the holiday, Cigrand became known as the "Father of Flag Day". For more information about Cigrand, see the nearby cache GC29176 Father of Flag Day.

At the posted coordinates you will find the restored one-room schoolhouse and a very tall flag pole. There are two historical markers on the site with more information about Flag Day. The site is closed at night and neighbors keep a close watch on it, so please do not visit after dark.
