Dvignimo kozarce! 🍷

Na izhodiščnih koordinatah danes stoji kip najbolj znanega slovenskega pesnika Franceta Prešerna.
V svoji pesmi Zdravljica nazdravlja prijateljstvu, míru, spravi in vsem dobrim ljudem. Kitice so napisane v obliki silhuete vinskih kozarcev.

V začetku 19. stoletja je trgovec Viktor Wutscher pritlično stavbo ob mostu nadgradil še z enim nadstropjem in jo pokril s prvo ravno streho v mestu, vrh katere sta stali dve kovinski buči.

Raise our glasses! 🍷

On the main coordinates you can nowadays see a statue of Slovenia's most famous poet France Prešeren. In his poem Zdravljica (A Toast) Prešeren gives toasts to friendship, peace, reconciliaton, and to all good people in general. Even the stanzas are written in the shape of wine glasses! There is another interesting fact about this place: before the monument was built in 1905, exactly on this very spot there stood the inn "Pri Bučarju" (At Bučar's). Combining these two facts, there is an obvious

  • TASK ONE: attach your original photo of proposing a toast with Prešeren's monument in the background.

You can be as creative as you like. Besides, we would love to read in the log what you are toasting to. Why? Slovenes like to toast (and we like wine) - we have chosen the seventh stanza of A Toast (Zdravljica) as our national anthem! Its verses are also printed on our IDs as a security element and on the two-euro coins. Not far away you can find the national anthem on Čopova street, where you are awaited by the

  • TASK TWO: locate the text of our national anthem on Čopova street (waypoint) and attach your photo, on which you show the first letter of your geocaching nickname. If the text doesn't contain the first one, try the next letters in your nickname. If none of your nickname letters are in the text, you may pick any letter you like.

Long description

Zdravljíca (A Toast) is a poem written by France Prešeren as a toast in November 1844. It was probably created on initiative of Matija Vrtovc, winegrower from Šentvid, who adressed Prešeren to write a poem, celebrating vine and wine. Nonetheless, the song overcame plain joy about young wine and friendly socializing, its optimism grew into politically very daring song at the time. Prešeren united thoughts of friendship with the wish of equality, freedom, brotherhood, and respect between all the people and different nations. And so it grew from private adressing of friends into a national song, speaking about the Slovenian nation, its destiny and a call for world peace. It was heavily censored upon publishing. Almost 150 years later the seventh stanza of A Toast lyrics has become the national anthem of Republic of Slovenia. Melody comes from the choral composition from composer Stanko Premrl (1880-1965). It is one of the rare national anthems in the world promoting internationalism and friendship across borders. There also exists a rock version by a group named Lačni Franz from 1987.

       God's blessing on all nations,
Who long and work for that bright day,
       When o'er earth's habitations
    No war, no strife shall hold its sway;
             Who long to see
            That all men free
No more shall foes, but neighbours be.

Mary square, today Prešeren square, used to look a bit different before Prešeren monument was built. Throughout the history the square switched not only names, but also function and visual layout. It was used to sell livestock and food, as a home to all kinds of traders, as a tram track and until recently for private and public transport, before it finally became a pedestrian only square. But only a few know, what was on the very spot now occupied by the monument. There stood Bučar inn, named after two big pumpkins on the roof (buča (Slovenian) -> pumpkin (en)). In a neighbouring building there was a pharmacy "At golden deer".

At the beginning of 19th century trader Viktor Wutscher upgraded one-floor building with another floor and covered it with the first horizontal roof in the town with two big metal pumpkins. By owners assertions they had no connection to his surname (slovene surname Bučar otherwise comes from german Wutscher), but they only positively contributed to choosing the only logical name for the inn.

In the 1877 the inn was transferred over to the hands of trader Viktor Schiffer. Like many other Ljubljana buildings, this one was damaged by 1895 earthquake. In the years 1904-05 it was finally demolished – and by that, place for a completely new story in city's history was opened.

In 1905 the France Prešeren monument was built. The unveiling ceremony that was attended by twenty thousand people took place on Sunday, September 10th.

Since then the "Bučar inn" only exists - virtually.
