The First Virtual geocache in beautiful country of Georgia.
Dear Geocachers,
I would like to use my Virtual Reward cache to introduce you one of the most stunning places I've seen during my trip to Georgia. I hope you will enjoy visit of this distinguished monument of nature and human activity that can be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in near future.
Vardzia (Georgian: ვარძია) is a cave monastery site in southern Georgia, excavated from the slopes of the Erusheti Mountain on the left bank of the Kura River, 30 kilometres from Aspindza. The main period of construction was the 2nd half of the 12th century. The caves stretch along the cliff for some 500 meters and in up to 19 tiers!



The Church of the Dormition, dating to the 1180s during the golden age of Tamar and Rustaveli, has an important series of wall paintings. The site was largely abandoned after the Ottoman takeover in the sixteenth century.

ვარძია — კლდეში ნაკვეთი სამონასტრო ანსამბლი, XII-XIII საუკუნეების ქართული მხატვრული კულტურის ძეგლი. მდებარეობს ისტორიულ ჯავახეთში, ასპინძის რაიონში (ასპინძინდან 30 კმ). მდ. მტკვრის მარცხენა ნაპირზე. ზღვის დონიდან 1300 მეტრზე. ოროგრაფიული სქემის მიხედვით ვარძია მდებარეობს ერუშეთის ქედის აღმოსავლეთის განტოტების ბოლოს. ვარძიის უკიდურესი ზედა გამოქვაბული ზღვის დონიდან 1462 მ-ზე ძევს.
