When I learned I was awarded a virtual cache, my thoughts first went to Lake Winnipesaukee, which has held a special place for my family for several decades across several generations. I still love to come here every year, and we all love to pass by this spot on the channel- it's on the most direct route for us to ice cream in Meredith!
Bear Island is the largest unabridged island of the 262 islands on Lake Winnipesaukee. The island in summer is home to approximately 200 residents (plus residents at two summer camps, Camp Nokomis for girls and Camp Lawrence for boys), and so the island also has services such as a church and post office. The latter is of interest for this virtual, serviced mid-June to mid-September by the Sophie C, one of only two floating post offices in the USA and part of a summer service on the lake dating to 1892.
Boat parking is free at the mail dock in designated spots (i.e., on the back side of the dock- don't block the Sophie C's spot), and if you are here I highly recommend scouting out the other geocaches on Bear Island as well- GC1W9QE is easily accessible from here and you get to see some cool old history on the island, and the caches around St. John's on the Lake a few miles south on Bear have also received favorite points from me!
To log this cache:
- Mesage me through the geocaching website what the inside of the building is used for, and the number of mailboxes present in the back.
- Prove you were here with a picture taken the date of your visit, either in the message or in your log. Said picture must include the dock, the building, and part of you (hand w GPS, your feet, face would be nice but not required, etc) to prove this wasn't a pic taken by telephoto lens.
Happy caching, and enjoy the lake!
