Die Luftbrücke

Vom 26. Juni 1948 bis zum 12. Mai 1949 wurde die eingeschlossene Berliner Bevölkerung mit lebenswichtigen Gütern aus der Luft versorgt. Aus der ganzen Welt verlegte man die Flugzeuge des Typs Douglas C-54 "Skymaster" hierher nach Frankfurt am Main (Rhein-Main). So konnten die Alliierten schon bald nach Beginn der Luftbrücke Berlin rund um die Uhr anfliegen. Den Piloten stand aber wegen der minütlich einfliegenden Flugzeuge nur ein Landeanflug zur Verfügung. Wenn dieser Versuch misslang, mussten sie unverrichteter Dinge umdrehen und wegen des Einbahn-Strassen-Systems (siehe Bild) zu einem Ausweich-Flugplatz fliegen. |

Auch aus heutiger Sicht war die Luftbrücke eine logistische Meisterleistung. In knapp elf Monaten wurden mit 349 Flugzeugen bei 277.264 Flügen insgesamt 2,34 Millionen Tonnen Güter transportiert. Von Frankfurt aus wurden Nahrungsmittel, Kohle und Benzin nach Berlin verfrachtet.
Es ist bis heute die größte Luftbrücke der Geschichte.

Das Luftbrückendenkmal

Das Luftbrückendenkmal in Frankfurt wurde am 26. Juni 1985 auf die Initiative des Vereins Luftbruecke Chapter of the Airlift Tanker Association e.V. aufgestellt, der hierfür 940.000 D-Mark sammelte und ist ein Duplikat zu dem 1951 am Platz der Luftbrücke vor dem Flughafen Tempelhof in Berlin errichteten Monument, das der Berliner Volksmund dort auch "Hungerharke" oder "Hungerkralle" nennt.
Am Sockel des Denkmals sind auf Metalltafeln eine Gedenkschrift und die Namen der Opfer festgehalten. Neben dem Denkmal stehen eine Douglas C-47 und eine Douglas C-54 – Flugzeugtypen, die bei der Luftbrücke eine große Rolle spielten. Diese hatten von der Bevölkerung auch die Beinamen "Rosinenbomber" erhalten, weil die Piloten Kaugummi, Schokolade und vielleicht auch Rosinen für die Berliner Kinder abwarfen.

| Sinnbildlich stehen die drei Streben des Denkmals für die drei Luftkorridore zwischen Westberlin und der damaligen Trizone, der späteren Bundesrepublik Deutschland.
Das Denkmal war lange nur zu bestimmten Zeiten öffentlich zugänglich und konnte außerhalb solcher Öffnungszeiten nur durch den Zaun des Flughafengeländes betrachtet werden (von der A 5 aus oder über einen Fußweg).
Nach Restaurierungsarbeiten ist es seit dem 12. September 2008 für Besucher wieder regelmäßig zugänglich, erreichbar über einen Radweg vom Terminal 2 oder von Zeppelinheim aus.
Das Ensemble wurde am 25. September 2015 um den „Berliner Meilenstein“ ergänzt, einen Stein, der darauf hinweist, dass die Entfernung vom Frankfurter Kreuz aus bis Berlin noch 550 km beträgt. Ursprünglich stand der Stein seit 1958 zwischen den Fahrbahnen der A 5 und musste 1970 einer Fahrbahnverbreiterung weichen.

Die Logbedingungen
Derzeit ist das Luftbrückendenkmal für die Öffentlichkeit leider geschlossen, da die beiden Flugzeuge auf dem Gelände einer aufwändigen Restauration unterzogen werden sollen. Leider konnte mir die FRAPORT AG nicht sagen, wann die Arbeiten beginnen geschweige denn, wann sie enden werden. Bis auf weiteres gilt daher folgendes: Macht ein Foto von Euch/Eurem GPS vor dem Zaun des derzeit leider geschlossenen Denkmals und ein weiteres Foto von Euch vom Spotter-Point auf der Brücke aus, während ein Flugzeug landet oder startet.

Between June 26th, 1948 and May 12th, 1949 the overall entrapped population of Berlin was provided with life essential goods through the air. From all over the world airplanes of the type Douglas C-54 "Skymaster" were relocated here to Frankfurt am Main (Rhine-Main). So short after the airbridge begun the Allies could approach Berlin as soon as possible day and night. But because of airplanes approaching every minute the piltos only had one chance to land. If this approach failed, they had to divert because of the one way-system as described in the picture. |

Even from atodays point of view the airbridge was a logistical master stroke. With 349 airplanes with a total of 277.264 flight movements there was a total transportation of 2.34 tons of good in almost elefen months. Out of Frankfurt foods, coal and gas was flewn to Berlin. Until no it is the biggest airbridge in history.

The airbridge monument

The airbridge monument was built upon the initative by the society Luftbruecke Chapter of the Airlift Tanker Association e.V. on June 26th, 1985, wich collected 940.000 german marks and which is a duplicate of the monument in Berlin near the airport Berlin Tempelhof, located at the Platz der Luftbruecke. The Berlin vernacular calls this monument "Hungerharke" or "Hungerkralle" as well.
At the monuments socket there is a memorial volume as well as the names of the victims on metal plates. Besides to the monument there is a Douglas C-47 and a Douglas C-54 - aircrafts which played a major role during the airbridge. They also got the byname "Rosinembomber" from the population, as the pilots dropped chococlate, chewing gums and maybe raisins as well for the children of Berlin.

The three braces of the monument symbolically stand for the three airbridge corridors between West-Berlin and the trizone at that time.
The monument was only accessible to sepecific times for a long time and could - outside these times - only be viewed through a fence of the airport area.
After some renovation it is accessible regularly since September 12th 2008.
The ensemble was completed through the "Berlin milestone" on September 25th, 2015 - a stone - which notifies the distance between Frankfurt and Berlin is still 550km.
Originally this stone was placed since 1958 between the lanes of the highway A5 and had to be moved 1970 because of extension of the lanes.

The log requirements
Sadly and until further notice the airbridge monument is closed for the public. Both airplanes need to undergo intensive restauration for which FRAPORT was unable to tell me when they start and when they will end. To log your visit make a picture of yourself/your GPS in front of the fence of the closed entry of the monument and a second one at the nearby spooter point with a starting or landing aircraft in the background.
