Point Lookout in New England National Park is a mountain on the Snowy Range. It has views across to the Bellinger River Valley and on a clear day, all the way to the ocean. In 1986 New England National Park (as part of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia) was added to the World Heritage List in recognition of its outstanding natural heritage values. More than 52,000 hectares is a Wilderness Area providing an undisturbed refuge for flora and fauna.
At an elevation of 1,564 metres Point Lookout is refreshingly cool in summer. In winter months it can be breathtakingly beautiful when the waterfalls are frozen and icicles hang from trees. It's a good idea to bring warm clothes at any time.
Point Lookout offers accommodation - cottages, chalets, cabins and camping. A free camp is located just before entering the National Park at Little Styx River.
THE CACHE AS AT 16 JANUARY 2023: EAGLES NEST WALKING TRACK IS PRESENTLY CLOSED. UNTIL MAINTENANCE IS COMPLETE AND THE TRACK REOPENED THE CACHE HAS BEEN RESTRUCTURED.
Logging the cache involves visiting two lookouts on each end of the Eagles Nest track - The Main Viewing Platform and the Platypus Valley Lookout. A walking track info board can be located in the carpark. Send the answer to the question to the CO at the top of the page shown as "message this owner". The photo(s) should be added to your log.
WP1 - Main Viewing Platform
Task 1 - From the plaque answer the question - What was the profession of the person named on the plaque?
WP2 - Platypus Valley Lookout
Task 2 - Platypus Valley Lookout is renowned for no platypus ever having been seen here despite many thousands of visitors scanning the bush. For that reason, you need a photo of an eagle, preferably with the view. Here is a chance to be creative and it's up to your imagination how you complete either option of the task.
Option 1 - It can be a real eagle, a drawing (as simple as on your hand to something more elaborate), an impersonation, etc. OR
Option 2 - A photo with the word "eagle"
You will need to retrace your steps to get back to the carpark or if preferred, continue on to other walking trails.
