Dansk Historien om Kongens Have

En rundtur i Kongens Have

WP4 Dronning Caroline Amalie

WP4 Dronning Caroline Amalie

English The history of The King's Garden

The King’s Garden (Kongens Have) was established in the early 17th century as Christian IV’s pleasure and kitchen gardens for his castle Rosenborg. The garden acted as a setting for entertainments for the king and his visitors, and also supplied the court at Copenhagen Castle with fruit and vegetables. The garden continued to be used as a kitchen garden for the royal household right up until the late 19th/early 20th century.

The garden was opened to the public in the 1770s by J.F. Struensee. He was physician to Christian VII, who is believed to have suffered from schizophrenia.

Although the park has undergone several major changes, the three entrances have been preserved. Inside the park you will find the Hercules Pavillon, and the famous statue of Hans Christian Andersen.

Today the King’s Garden is one of Copenhagen’s most popular parks, attracting some three million visitors every year. The park continues to serve as the setting for many forms of entertainment and is home to attractions such as a delightful playground and in the summer the traditional Marionet Teater Puppet Theatre.

A tour of the King's Garden

To log this cache, take a trip around the King's Garden. You must visit the following 5 waypoints and solve a number of tasks on the way.

WP1 The Hørup Monument

The memorial is a tribute to politician Viggo Hørup, who was a member of the Left Party, where he placed himself strongly in the radical wing, known as the Venster Reform Party. As no other of the politicians of the period, he understood to formulate the political slogans, at the end of the 1870s, thus, "No one over and nobody next to the parliament." The parliamentary regime was his key issue, and in the struggle against Conservative congressional president J. B. S. Estrup, ruling on provisional laws, he was one of the strongest.

WP2 Damegangen

Damegangen (the Ladies Walkway) is one of the two major main walkways in the King's Garden, still as Christian IV laid them out in the beginning of the 17th century. It is today flanked by impressive big old trees on both sides.

WP3 Then Dragon Egg

The playground in King's Garden is shaped like an adorable flower with four leaves, and a golden egg - the Dragon Egg - in the middle like the eye of the flower. There are both footbridges, fire-breathing dragons and deep sandy ditches - if you have the imagination to see it. The playground is mostly for the younger children.

WP4 Queen Caroline Amalie

The Statue of Queen Caroline Amalie (1796-1881) is one of the mere 6 statues of named women in Denmark. The widow after Christian VIII was childless, but devoted her life to the care of the children of others. She created asylums in both Odense and Copenhagen. Caroline Amalie's religious mind is emphasized in the statue that she is wearing a pipe collar and holds a hymnbook in her hand.

WP5 The Lions at the Green Bridge

The lions at Green Bridge have a pretty fun story. The Hofavalers used to have fun throwing silver coins after the lions, and after a long time many of these coins ended in the mouth of the lions, where they could not grab them. Therefore in 1744, three soldiers from the royal guard stole one of the lions and crushed it. They served well, but they were discovered and sentenced to lifelong slavery after they had been whipped and branded. It is further said that one of the lions was equipped with a loose tongue, so that the king could hide his key to the castle in the lion's mouth when he was unofficially visiting in the city.

The Task

When you visit the 5 waypoints, you have to solve the tasks below. You have to write the answers to the questions in an email along with your geocacher name and mail it to kongens-have@pihl-zimling.dk. Answers in Danish and English are accepted. If one or more waypoints are blocked so that it is not possible to find the necessary information, write it instead of the answer to those waypoints.

WP1 The Hørup Monument

On each side of the statue's socket there is a bronze relief. At the relief there is "written" a year. You must find the lowest of the 3 year.

WP2 Damegangen

At the coordinate, take a picture of you or your GPS with the castle in the background. Upload the image together with your log.

WP3 Then Dragon Egg

What part of the dragon can you see through the hole in the shell?

WP4 Queen Caroline Amalie

How many bows are there at the bottom of Queen Caroline Amalie's dress?

WP5 The Lions at the Green Bridge

Looking at the castle, at which side of the bridge is the lion where you can hide a key in? Left or right? (Hint: See the description of WP5 for the story of the Lions)
