Geocache Description:

This virtual will bring you to the formal mansion where Colonel R.S. “SAM” McLaughlin and his family lived in Oshawa Ontario. The mansion is now called “PARKWOOD” and is open to the public most days for tours. You can drive through the front entrance to the mansion from Simcoe Street. You can park free on the grounds. I encourage you to take the tour of the mansion when it is open.

Colonel Sam established the McLaughlin Motor Car Company in 1907. This company became part of General Motors in 1918 with McLaughlin as president of the Canadian company and a vice president of the American corporation. A noted philanthropist, he provided funds to build the McLaughlin Planetarium at Toronto ,erect buildings at Queens University, Kingston, and endow a medical foundation. His mansion “PARKWOOD”, begun in 1916, was designed by a Toronto architectural firm. This notable house and distinguished gardens were bequeathed to the Oshawa general Hospital in 1972. Many movies are filmed in the mansion and the surrounding property. Even though the mansion can be seen most days ,year round, the Italian Water garden within the Formal Garden is breath taking and should not be missed. Plan accordingly if you wish to experience all that this location has to offer. In order to log this virtual, you must includea photo in your log of the front of the mansion including the pillars in the back ground. If by some chance the outside gates are locked, you can take the photo standing in front of the gates while still having the mansion in the photo background. Selfies are encouraged, but of course not required.
