A quick urban cache in downtown Mareeba.
The Tobacco Leaf Marketing Board building was the base for the most influential business, agricultural & marketing group in the Tablelands region in the 1960’s & 70’s. Decisions made within this building and its marketing activities, led to a great increase in the prosperity of the Mareeba district, as the result of the expansion of the tobacco growing industry.
The first tobacco trials in the Mareeba area were carried out in 1928 and provided unemployment relief during the depression. The marketing of tobacco was in the hands of the Australian Tobacco Board but its performance was heavily criticised by local growers and was replaced in 1948 by the grower controlled authority, the Tobacco Leaf Marketing Board. The industry had done well during World War II but after the war, water shortages placed a strain on the industry. The Tobacco Leaf Marketing Board worked actively during this period to promote the sale of local produce and lobby for irrigation, receiving a boost with the irrigation benefits of Tinaroo Dam after 1958. The Byrnes St building dates from the 1960's and incorporates a distinctive & and unusual façade for the Tablelands region, enhancing the post-war character of Mareeba.
Tobacco production in the region was reasonably stable until a decline after deregulation in 1995 with the industry winding up completely by 2002. Further information on the rise and fall of the local tobacco industry can be obtained from the Mareeba Shire Council.
This cache is not on the building in question, but at a location offering a clear view of it. The cache does not have room for swaps & is BYOP. Please replace carefully as found & due to the exposed location, stealth is essential. Please keep a close watch on children as this is a busy road. Happy caching!
