Tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog werden kerktorens, molens en andere hoge gebouwen, die een uitstekend zicht boden op de omgeving, vaak als observatiepost uitgebouwd. Vanuit deze posten konden de Belgische waarnemers de vijandelijke artillerie observeren en gegevens doorseinen naar de eigen artillerie. Ze konden de vijandelijke troepenbewegingen bespieden en de aanleg van nieuwe versterkingen beloeren. In Ramskapelle werden schoorstenen van de steenbakkerij uitgebouwd tot observatiepost. Nu is in ieder geval maar één versterkte schoorsteen overgebleven. De steenbakkerij fungeerde in oktober 1917 als hoofdkwartier voor de "126th (East Lancashire) Brigade" en de "Royal Engineers 428 Field Company". Zij zouden de schoorsteen verstevigd hebben.

Durant la Première Guerre Mondial les tours d’églises, moulins et autres grands bâtiments qui fournissaient une vue excellente sur les environs, furent adaptées comme poste d’observation. De ces postes, les observateurs Belge pouvait observer l’artillerie ennemie et contacter leur propre artillerie. Ils pouvaient voir les mouvements des troupes ennemies et espionner la réalisation des nouveaux renforts. A Ramscapelle les cheminées des briqueteries furent adaptées comme postes d’observations. Aujourd’hui, seulement une cheminée renforcée existe encore. La briqueterie servait en octobre 1917 comme quartier général de la 126ième (East Lancashire) Brigade et la 428ième Compagnie de campagne Royal Engineers. C’est eux qui probablement ont renforcé la cheminée.

During the First World War, church towers, windmills and other high buildings, which provided an excellent view of the surroundings, were often expanded as an observation post.
