n el centro de la Comunidad de Madrid, a unos 38 km al Este Sudeste de la capital y a una altitud de 665 metros, se encuentra el municipio de Brunete, de 10.596 habitantes, según el padrón municipal del 1 de enero de 2018, y 48,95 km2 de superficie.
El origen del nombre de Brunete, es opinión consensuada que se halla en bruneta o brunete, nombre que se da a "cierto paño basto de color negro" y que puede venir de la repoblación del territorio llevada a cabo por bataneros segovianos que producían lana basta y de color negruzco.
Te encuentras, estimado geocacher, en la Plaza Mayor de Brunete, centro neurálgico del pueblo, cargado de un gran significado para todos los vecinos. Considerada una de las plazas más atractivas de la provincia, así figura en las rutas turísticas confeccionadas por la Comunidad de Madrid, poco tiene que ver con la antigua plaza que le precedió entre los siglos XVI al XVIII y que fue destruida durante la cruenta batalla que ocurrió en la región en julio de 1937. El 97% del pueblo acabó en ruinas, quedando solo en pie la torre de la iglesia, aunque esta posteriormente fue remodelada también. También significó la desaparición del bosque que había al Norte de la población.
En 19 días 35.000 almas perecieron.
Todos ellos viven en nuestro recuerdo.

La Plaza
La actual plaza mayor, trazada en 1940 fue inaugurada en 1946 al mismo tiempo que se levantaba de nuevo todo el pueblo. Construida desde sus cimientos, destaca por su estilo herreriano, porticada, de piedra labrada. En un lateral a nivel del tejado sobresale un frontis con pináculos y un escudo de época, pocos adornos también en granito, balcones y rejerías en hierro forjado, una fuente monumental en el centro y unas escalinatas que solucionan los desniveles existentes.
Plaza mayor
En los contrafuertes de la escalinata que sube a la plazuela de la Iglesia existen dos placas en mármol, no exentas de polémica, que recuerdan su inauguración.
Sirva como curiosidad que la disposición en terrazas de la plaza no es baladí, colocando en una posición de predominancia al poder eclesiástico sobre el poder terrenal y este sobre el pueblo llano.
La Iglesia
La iglesia de N.ª S.ª de la Asunción fue remodelada en 1946 con estilo neoclasicista, incluyendo la portada renacentista, que databa de los tiempos de Isabel y Fernando. La estructura de arcos carpanel se sustituyó por una bóveda de cañón, y sobre el crucero, un cimborrio.
Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción
Su interior contiene una cúpula sobre pechinas, rematada por una linterna. A su vez la torre neoclásica existente fue completamente remodelada (sí, la única edificación que quedó en pie), dejando paso a una airosa y esbelta torre con chapitel de pizarra.
La Fuente
En el centro de la plaza, podremos contemplar una Fuente Pública construida en piedra. Consta de una pila circular en cuyo centro se alza un pilar que sostiene una esfera de la que salen cuatro surtidores que vierten su agua a la pila, todo ello de granito. El conjunto queda rematado y ornamentado por una estructura metálica que, en forma de arco, alberga un sol con una cara en relieve por ambos lados y de la que parten cuatro brazos del mismo material con idéntico número de faroles.

En 2016 el conjunto de la plaza y la Iglesia, así como ciertos espacios aledaños a la plaza y las dos lápidas conmemorativas situadas en la escalinata de acceso a la Iglesia y el escudo que preside la edificación del oeste fue declarado Bien de Interés Cultural (BIC)

The origin of the name Brunete is a consensus opinion that it is found in bruneta or brunete, a name given to "a certain coarse cloth of black color" and which may come from the repopulation of the territory carried out by Segovian full-fighters that produced coarse wool and blackish in color.
You are, dear geocacher, in the Brunete main square, the nerve center of the town, loaded with great meaning for all the residents. Considered, as it appears in the tourist routes by the Community of Madrid, one of the most attractive squares in the province . It is very different from the old square that preceded it between the 16th and 18th centuries. It was destroyed during the bloody battle that took place in the region in July 1937. 97% of the town ended up in ruins , leaving only the church tower standing, although it was later remodeled as well. The battle also made the forest in the north of the town dissapear.
In 19 days 35,000 souls perished.
All of them live in our memory.

The Square
The current main square, drawn up in 1940, was inaugurated in 1946 at the same time that the entire town was rising again. Built from its foundations, it stands out for its Herrerian style, porticoed, of carved stone. On one side at the level of the roof, a façade with pinnacles and a period coat of arms stands out, few decorations also in granite, balconies and wrought iron grills, a monumental fountain in the center and some stairways that solve the existing unevenness.
Main square
On the buttresses of the staircase that goes up to the Church square there are two marble plaques, not without controversy, that recall its inauguration.
Interesting to know that the terraced layout of the square is not trivial, placing the ecclesiastical power in a position of predominance over the earthly power and this over the common people.
The Church
The N.ª S.ª de la Asunción church was remodeled in 1946 in a neoclassic style, including the Renaissance façade, dating from the times of Isabel and Fernando. The structure of carpanel arches was replaced by a barrel vault, and on the transept, a dome.
Nuestra Señora de la Asunción church
Its interior contains a dome on pendentives, topped by a lantern. In turn, the existing neoclassical tower was completely remodeled (yes, the only building that remained standing), giving way to a graceful and slender tower with a slate spire.
The Fountain
In the center of the square, we can see a Public Fountain built in stone . It consists of a circular basin in the center of which stands a pillar that supports a sphere from which four jets come out that pour their water into the basin, all made of granite. The set is finished off and ornamented by a metal structure that, in the shape of an arch, houses a sun with a face in relief on both sides and from which four arms of the same material with the same number of lanterns emerge.

In 2016 the whole of the square and the Church, as well as certain spaces surrounding the square and the two commemorative tombstones located on the access stairway to the Church and the shield that presides over the west building was declared an Asset of Cultural Interest (BIC)
