Geocache Description:

You have found your next adventure! Thank you for joining us for the "Visit Centre County" GeoTour as we show you some of our most favorite caching locations to include state parks, beautiful vistas, and historical points of interest! Our team of GeoTour planners have worked very hard to put together various cache types to keep the GeoTour interesting and challenging; however, no geocache should be beyond a 3/3.5 for terrain and/or difficulty! We are pleased to show you around our County and hope that you will enjoy the GeoTour and complete your passport to collect your custom GeoTour Geocoin (there is a minimum number of caches required to receive coin)!

If you will be caching with some young ‘uns, we have a Jr. Geocaching Passport available for children, 12 yrs. and under, with a special prize for their hard work too! Caches will be marked as "family-friendly" and should correlate to the Jr. Geocaching Passport.

Download your "Visit Centre County" GeoTour passport and/or your Jr. Geocaching Passport or pick-up paper copies at the following coordinates: N 40° 48.879; W 077° 51.274 (Happy Valley Adventure Bureau). You’ll return your passport to the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau when complete and collect your prize if you meet the minimum requirements!

The "Visit Centre County" GeoTour is brought to you by Centre Region Parks and Recreation, the Happy Valley Adventure Bureau, and Groundspeak, Inc. We are pleased that you’ll be joining us in Happy Valley soon! Bring on the Adventures!

About Millheim

Millheim Borough is located in Centre County, Pennsylvania on Route 45 approximately 30 miles east of State College. The Borough is situated in a rural setting that offers close proximity to Penn State sporting activities, restaurants, theatres, and shopping. The town itself offers quaint craft shops, restaurants, a volunteer fire company, ambulance service, banking facilities, and a community swimming pool. The Borough has a designated Historic District that is listed with the Centre County Historical Society. The Penns Valley Area School District is located approximately three miles west of Millheim on Route 45. (From the borough website)

Historic Background: "The Town of Mills, began in the 1770s when Jacob Hubler built a gristmill and sawmill along the banks of Elk Creek, the first of many mills to flourish there. The importance of the town was further enhanced by being at the junction of four roads... By the 1870s Millheim had become the industrial, commercial, and residential center of Penns Valley with thirteen mercantile establishments and twelve major industries including new mills, two foundry and machine shops, two tanneries, a cement/lime kiln, and a chair factory. Two large hotels were added (one of them at the site of the current Millheim hotel), and the Lewisburg, Centre and Spruce Creek Railroad connected Millheim to the area and beyond. A large hosiery mill and a silk mill continued into the 20th century." (from Centre County Historical Society)

This cache is placed in Fountain Park with the explicit permission of the Millheim Borough Council.

Parking is available right at the cache location in the borough parking lot.

Please note the posted park hours. The sign at the parking area states that the park closes after 11pm. It is advised to avoid caching after dark, and please, no caching after the park is officially closed each evening.

Family Friendly: This is a family-friendly location with an easy-to-find geocache and a nearby waterway that is home to a number of ducks. Please supervise children when near the waterway, and please be aware of occasional alley traffic near the waterway. Please also stay on the public areas when watching the ducks, and avoid straying onto neighboring private land.

This location could be a high-muggle area during certain times of the day. Please use appropriate stealth when retrieving and returning the geocache container to its spot to avoid the container being taken / "muggled" by those not playing along with geocaching. The difficulty rating was bumped to 2.0 as stealth may be a challenge at times.
