Welcome to James T. Slavin Conservation Area. This is a 628 acre area featuring restored wetlands. There are close to 200 acres of permanent and seasonal wetlands on the property. It is a haven for waterfowl and songbirds, as well as many other animal species. It boasts aspen groves, wetlands, grassy meadows, ponderosa pine forests, and permanent ponds that create a varied landscape that supports spectacular diversity of wildlife and plants.
It has been identified by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife as an elk calving area and is along the waterfowl migratory routes. The property contains a five-acre permanent lake, many seasonal ponds, and has a wetland-stream corridor running north-south through its center. I have included coordinates for the natural land bridge for access to the west side from the east.
Sadly, due to the rise in the water table created by the successful restoration project, a portion of the original loop trail has been flooded and cannot be hiked outside of the driest month of the year. Spokane County Parks is working towards a long-term solution to this current situation. As a courtesy to private land owners, please be respectful and refrain from trespassing on adjacent private property to avoid the restored wetlands.
INFO:
Trailhead features a large gravel parking area with a porta potty. There is a webcam surveilling the parking lot. Being a wetland, be prepared to encounter bugs and lots of ticks during the seasons. A Discover Pass is not required here.
