Geocache Description:

Alchemist Cosimo Ruggieri created the first-ever fior di latte (flower of milk) sherbet flavor and won the cooking prize at the court of Catherine de' Medici in France.  The historical legend of this account often mistakenly refers to Ruggieri‘s creation as gelato, but his recipe contained milk and did not contain any egg, hence his dessert was a sherbet.  Some historical accounts incorrectly attribute this cooking prize to a venditore di polli (chicken vendor) by the name of Ruggeri in San Gimignano, a country side area near Florence Italy.

How The Italian Renaissance Brought Us Gelato (tastingtable.com)

Architect Bernardo Buontalenti is credited for the invention of the popular alla crema d'uovo (egg-cream) gelato flavor recipe since 1565 in Florence Italy.  It was a frozen cream made with ice, salt (to lower the temperature), lemon, sugar, egg, honey, milk and a drop of wine. His cold cream was flavored with bergamot and orange.
