Mill Creek Pond
I found some caches along Mill Creek up in the Canyon and some others in the city where part of the creek is piped and flows underground. I thought it would be interesting to mark the route of the creek to the Jordan river. This cache marks one of the hidden treasures of the creek.
With a few exceptions, Mill Creek in South Salt Lake City flows in an urbanized channel like at State St. Mill Creek Pond is one of the few exceptions.
East of 500 E the creek is dammed in a pond. It is a flood control device similar to the nearby Scott Avenue Park (residents around the pond need flood insurance) and it is a wildlife habitat.
The pond was built in the 1980s and is surrounded by private property. The pond, the creek and the surrounding area is a complicated mix of county, city and private property. There is no public access. There is no space to place a board walk along the lake.
There are some places where the public can get a glimpse of the pond. One of this places is along the creek from 500E. An other one is this spot. (There are tours to visit the pond every leap year if there is an eclipse on February 29. You should make reservations in advance. The next eclipse on February 29 will be in 2416.)
Check the pond for wildlife!
Use stealth during your search. This is a small neighborhood. You can park close to the cache or along 300E or in the nearby Fitts Park (where you can find more caches). This cache is a small container. BYOP. DON’T cross the fence to retrieve it. To get the cache you DON'T need tools, you DON'T have to destroy anything.
