### 18. Jahrhundert – Ursprünge
Ende des 18. Jahrhunderts wurde das Gebiet des heutigen Parks teilweise abgeholzt, um Platz für landwirtschaftliche Nutzung zu schaffen.
### 1876–1888 – Gestaltung durch Gustav Meyer
Zwischen 1876 und 1888 wurde der Park unter der Leitung des Stadtgartendirektors Gustav Meyer im englischen Landschaftsstil angelegt. Er war einer der ersten öffentlichen Parks Berlins, offen für alle Bürger:innen.
### 1896 – Erste Deutsche Kolonialausstellung
Im Jahr 1896 fand im Treptower Park die erste Deutsche Kolonialausstellung statt. Dabei wurden 106 Menschen aus deutschen Kolonien zur Schau gestellt – ein Ereignis, das heute zurecht als Beispiel von Rassismus und kolonialer Ausbeutung kritisiert wird.
### 1949 – Eröffnung des Sowjetischen Ehrenmals
Am 8. Mai 1949 wurde das Sowjetische Ehrenmal im Park eingeweiht. Es dient als Gedenkstätte für rund 7.000 der 80.000 Rotarmist:innen, die in der Schlacht um Berlin gefallen sind. Das Denkmal wurde von Jakow Belopolski entworfen und war das zentrale Kriegsdenkmal der DDR.
### 1949–1989 – Zeit der DDR
Während der DDR-Zeit war der Park ein Ort staatlicher Gedenkveranstaltungen und Symbol der antifaschistischen Erinnerungskultur. Das Sowjetische Ehrenmal spielte dabei eine zentrale Rolle.
### Nach 1990 – Wiedervereinigung und neue Perspektiven
Nach der Wiedervereinigung Deutschlands wurde der Park weiterhin als öffentlicher Raum genutzt. In den 1990er Jahren begann eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit seiner kolonialen Vergangenheit.
### 2021–2024 – Dekoloniale Erinnerungskultur
Die Initiative "Dekoloniale" startete ein Projekt zur Aufarbeitung der kolonialen Geschichte des Parks. Dazu gehören eine Dauerausstellung im Treptow-Museum, Stadtführungen und interaktive Karten, die koloniale Spuren in Berlin sichtbar machen.
### 2025 – Aktuelle Bedeutung
Heute ist der Treptower Park ein beliebter Erholungsort mit vielfältigen Freizeitmöglichkeiten. Gleichzeitig bleibt er ein Ort des Gedenkens und der kritischen Auseinandersetzung mit der Geschichte – von der Kolonialausstellung bis zum Sowjetischen Ehrenmal.

### 18th century - origins
At the end of the 18th century, the area of today's park was partially deforested to make room for agricultural use.
### 1876-1888 - design by Gustav Meyer
Between 1876 and 1888, the park was laid out in the English landscape style under the direction of city garden director Gustav Meyer. It was one of Berlin's first public parks, open to all citizens.
### 1896 - First German Colonial Exhibition
In 1896, the first German Colonial Exhibition was held in Treptower Park. It showcased 106 people from German colonies - an event that is rightly criticised today as an example of racism and colonial exploitation.
### 1949 - Opening of the Soviet memorial
The Soviet Memorial in the park was inaugurated on 8 May 1949. It serves as a memorial to around 7,000 of the 80,000 Red Army soldiers who fell in the Battle of Berlin. The memorial was designed by Jakow Belopolski and was the central war memorial of the GDR.
### 1949-1989 - the GDR era
During the GDR era, the park was a site of state memorial events and a symbol of the anti-fascist culture of remembrance. The Soviet memorial played a central role in this.
### After 1990 - reunification and new perspectives
After German reunification, the park continued to be used as a public space. In the 1990s, a critical examination of its colonial past began.
### 2021-2024 - Decolonial culture of remembrance
The ‘Dekoloniale’ initiative launched a project to reappraise the park's colonial history. This includes a permanent exhibition in the Treptow Museum, city tours and interactive maps that visualise colonial traces in Berlin.
### 2025 - Current significance
Today, Treptow Park is a popular recreational area with a wide range of leisure activities. At the same time, it remains a place of remembrance and critical examination of history - from the colonial exhibition to the Soviet memorial.
