Geocache Description:


Hampstead woods - locally known wooded area with classic New England walking / mountain biking trails and some interesting ruins. The trails extend much further, but the walk to the cache is easy.

Park at unmarked trailhead at the end of Golden Meadow Road: N 42 52.150, W 71 8.255.
NOTE: There is no way to get in from Faith Drive without crossing privat property, so the parking area at Golden Meadow is the best way in.

Old foundations from the late 1700-1800's can be found along a meandering stream through the woods. thelynchster reports that the foundations are the remains of one or several shingle mills.

The coordinates mark a spot where you can see the cache (about 10 ft away), but it is not the cache location itself. There is a reason for this. :) (you're more likely to get a gps reading from the coordinates than from the cache spot.)

Bring bug spray for mosquitoes during summer months (evenings especially). Low tick potential (no brush to wade through).
FOR KIDS: easy walk in, and lots to explore. Toads are guaranteed. With a net, you can catch frogs.
FOR TECHIES: Waypoint marked using a Garmin GPS48 (with quad-helix antenna), averaged over 5 minutes, EPE of 15ft, 7 satellites reporting. I find the quad-helix does better with leaf cover; your results may vary.
FOR DOGS: (in dawg talk) Tell your caretakers that this is a dog-friendly spot that you'd love to visit. FOR EXERCISE: Summer months, people mountain bike the trails, winter months people snowshoe or ski, leaving a nicely packed trail walkable without snowshoes.
