Geocache Description:

Cherokee Cemetery Series: Carmel

In 1835, pioneering families migrated from Morgan County Georgia to Cherokee County Alabama settling in Ambersonville, which is now called Spring Garden. They were members of Carmel Presbyterian Church in Morgan County and brought the charter with them. Since there was no Presbyterian church in the area, they met in the home of Andrew Burnes to worship and form another church. On Sunday June 19, 1836 the Carmel Presbyterian Church was organized with Reverend John C. Likens presiding. George W. King, Archibald O. Stewart, and Andrew Burnes were elected and ordained as the first ruling elders. Charter members were the families of Amberson, Akin, Burnes, Craig, Davis, King, Powers, Shadden, Stuart, and Swan all of which you will find buried here. The first church building was a log structure located in this cemetery. There is now a marker where it stood. It was one of the earliest churches in the county. Four different structures were located here, before the new building was erected across the road. The first service was held there January 1989. This site is registered with the Presbyterian Historical Society.

It is hidden just outside of the cemetery. There is no need to enter the woods. Please remember to be discreet as with any geocache placed in a public area. Due to the location of the caches in this series it would be awkward explaining the nature of what you’re doing to someone who’s family member may be buried here.

The cache is a bison tube with log only- BYOP.
