I've never been charged to get into Alum Rock Park on a weekday, but YMMV. The best approach is to go towards Once Bitten, Twice Shy and then just keep on going up. Once at the cache site just continue on in whichever direction you were headed and you will have a good option to descend again. I made a loop from the parking lot in about an hour.

If you're wondering how to reach the cache, follow the small trail into the rocks and circle around to the cache site.
