Geocache Description:

The Water of Leith Walkway is 12 miles long running from Balerno to Leith, through Edinburgh.

You are cordially invited to travel along the ‘Silver Thread in a Ribbon of Green’ that runs through Scotland’s capital city on Saturday 25th September 2004.  We will start at the Balerno end and finish in the Port of Leith, whenever you get there.

Now this will take a bit of planning unless you are going to walk back to Balerno!  Did I say walk?  You could always cycle your way up and down the walkway, as I know there are plenty of folks that are getting on their bikes for the journey.

At the start of the Walkway is Haggis Hunter’s Silver Thread in a Ribbon of Green and I’ll be nearby to see you off.  (All caches on the Walkway are listed on this cache page, so you can check them all out there.)  There is limited parking in the vicinity, if you want to leave the car here and return for it later.  Information on buses is noted below.

Other options are parking at the Leith end and getting the bus to the start of the Walkway or parking at an intermediate point and again using the bus.  There is street parking in Leith, particularly to the East around Leith Links.  For simplicity and security you may prefer to leave the car at the Ocean Terminal and get the bus to the starting point.  The Ocean Terminal is well signposted on the routes through the city and the 22 bus runs frequently to the city centre from there.

Bus information:  The £2 Day Saver ticket will let you hop on and off buses all day long, if you like.  As there is no direct bus service connecting Balerno and Leith, you will have to change buses at some point so the Day Saver makes sense.  The only service going to Balerno is the 44, but there are plenty linking Leith with the City Centre where you can catch the 44.  It is probably easiest to change buses on Princes Street as both services run along it.

Number 22 timetable

Number 44 timetable

Train:  Get yourself to Haymarket and catch the 44 in Dalry Road.  See above for more on buses.

Times:  Set off from Balerno between 9:30 and 11.  That should give me enough time to get there myself!

Meet up afterwards at the King’s Wark pub in Leith on The Shore, co-ordinates N 55.58.552  W003.10.152, for some scran and a light refreshment or two!  The pub is on the corner of the Shore and Bernard Street and you really cannot miss it!  See you there and we can have a crack about caching and swap a few TB's!.

I will aim to have my car available at the Leith end and am more than happy to do some taxi duties, if required.  If you are not staying on afterwards, let me know so that I don’t call out a search party!  E-mail me with any other questions.  Hope you enjoy the day!
