Geocache Description:

Another cache set in the beautiful Luxulyan valley. The cache can be treated as an off-set regular cache but there is an additional task (for which a torch might be useful).

The cache is set in celebration of my double gold in caches and can be completed in conjunction with 'Cornwall's Mining Heritage - Luxulyan Valley'(GC116DV),
Cornwall contains evidence of localised enrichments of gold in alluvial deposits, in association with vein minerals and "stratiform and epithermal" gold enrichments in the Devonian and Carboniferous rocks of North Cornwall. Recent studies have indicated that significant but unrecorded quantities of gold have been produced in Cornwall and in the past may have provided a limited extra source of income for miners exploiting alluvial tin deposits. The Luxulyan valley was a rich source of copper and tin and it is said that gold has been panned from the Par River, which runs through the valley.
This cache is set in the hope that you might find gold. As well as the golden cache you may also find some sort of 'gold' of your own in the valley.

YOUR LOG MIGHT CONTAIN A MENTION OF THE "OTHER" GOLD YOU FIND, This is now only an optional request (following the new guidelines)

However you will not need to pan for gold in the river. You may, for example, look for ‘Goblin’s Gold’ (Elfin Gold). As well as being a rich source of minerals, the valley is also a source of rare plant life. Goblin’s Gold (a.k.a. Luminous Moss, Cave Moss) is a light reflecting plant of the order Bryales (Schistostega pennata) It is found in dark damp places. Search in damp crevices, the underside of damp boulders and under treewads (the root balls of fallen trees) A yellowish green glow indicates Goblin’s Gold.

Within 25m of the cache site is a rotting tree stump (about 1.2m (4 feet) tall, just to the NE of this is a small hole between some boulders in a bank. At the time of setting the cache, this hole contained 'Goblin's Gold' Have a look but please do not disturb (and don't claim this in your log!). If your search does lead to you finding your own ‘Goblin’s Gold’ please email the co-ordinates and a brief description of the site to me via the profile but do not include the co-ordinates with your log. (There was a separate prize for the first to find their own 'Goblin's Gold'.)

And if you don’t find Goblin’s Gold there are lots of other golds in the valley from golden catkins in the Spring to the golden hues of Autumn. And it may be a golden moment when you find the gold in this cache.
Remember your on line log may include mention or a photo of 'gold' (other than the cache) you have found in the valley. It doesn't matter if it has already been recorded by someone else, but let your imagination and creativity flow.

On to the physical cache.
The co-ordinates given are for parking at Pont’s Mill (just off the A390) N 50º 22.398, W004º 42.699. Nearby (N50º22.429, W004º42.702) you will find an Environment Agency board with a name, telephone number and an sx grid reference. Letter the numbers in alphabetic order.

Tel. no. ABCD EF GHIJ,
SX no. KLMN OPQR
Because of a change since the cache was set, you are given S= 4 and T=2
How many letters are there in the name on the board? = U

From the board go to N50ºTT.SIU W004ºST.BUA. Here you will find a black notice with white letters and numbers on it. Replace the gold letters with the numbers on the board.
V 8 W m X 3 Y / Z c

This second board for gathering information seems to have been removed. I am currently on the other side of the world and will not be back until the end of the year so if anyone wants to find the cache the numbers you require are V=2 W=3 X=5 Y=1 Z=4

Now go to N50ºTV.ZEX, W004º ST.QVU , cross the style and take the path up.
When you get to W50ºTV.SBS, W004ºST.UAC take the small path on the right to N50ºTV. XCD, W 004ºSV.UTF.
Turn left and follow the path to the cache which is at N50ºTV.NFU W004ºSW.YVW

Surprisingly, there is a theme to this cache! When set, the 2l. cache contained a golden coin for the FTF, a special prize of a lucky gold pixie for the first person to find their own 'Goblin's Gold', 2 pairs of gold plated earrings, a 'gold' padlock, a 'gold' pencil, a sewing kit with a 'gold' safety pin, a 'gold' Kroon from Estonia, a pair of 'gold' buttons, a piece of Fool’s Gold (Iron Pyrites) 2 'gold' edged shells, a 'gold' star, a 'gold' brooch and a 'gold' geocoin. (I use 'gold' to refer to the colour rather than the metal!) So if you trade please keep strictly to the theme. Please note that under the new Guidelines the Additional Logging Requirement (ALR) is only optional and logs will not be deleted if mention of the 'other gold' is not included.
