Walter Burley-Griffin is most well known for designing Canberra,
but here's another example of his impact on Sydney.
The Incinerator started operating in the 1930s and did so until
the 60s - because of the smell! The suburb's rubbish was dumped at
the top and fed into the furnace at the bottom of the building.
After ceasing operation it became a restaurant and then an
office. I remember it catching fire in the early 80's when I was a
kid living up the road... the irony! More details and pictures are
at
http://www.twentieth.org.au/Incinerator/Incinerator.html.
Difficulty bumped up a fraction due to muggles loving this area.
There's a playground for GeoKids to enjoy while you wait. Check the
soccer fields to the west of the cache... when I was young there
was no landfill here, the ground level was 50m lower and we could
scream down on our BMXs down the 45 degree slope... but now, the
joys of landfill...
Accessible by public transport - catch the 272/273 between
Wynyard (city) and Chatswood in either direction, and get off at
the big Porsche dealer.
