This Micro cache (my first!) is one in what should become a
series of micros allowing people to explore some of the less
well-known areas of Telford.
This particular Micro is situated at the top of a hill known as
the Cockshutt Piece, which had been used during the industrial
revolution as a supply of wood for the coalmines. There were also
several industrial revolution transportation lines running over
this area, a canal once ran accross the north end of the Cockshutt,
which was subsequently drained off and is now completely impossible
to see any evidence of it.
There were several train lines running through here, the remains
of one of these can be seen at the site of the other neaby cache,
The Pig Rails, by Cachers Utd.
The Cockshutt piece is one of the highlights of a local trail,
The Silkin Way (named for Lewis Silkin, the Lord that was
instrumental in creating the New Towns Act) which follows the sites
of many old canal beds and train lines from the Industrial
Revolution period.
The trail starts in Coalport, and finishes in Bratton, running
straight through the entire length of Telford.
Parking
There are many potential Parking places in the area, depending
on how much walking you want to do:
The nearest parking space is at SJ 70233 10477 (N52 41.468, W002
26.512) which is on the top of the hill, and requires very little
walking, though there is only space for one or two cars here.
There's a bar, Minnesota Fats, at SJ 69876 10713 (N52 41.594,
W002 26.830) with a large carpark roughly half-way up the hill that
could probably be used.
Or in Oakengates, at the bottom of the hill, there's a
short-stay carpark which also provides easy access to the local
shops at SJ 69727 10832 (N52 41.657, W002 26.963).
None of these walks will present a challenge to an experienced
walker, the hill is not especially steep, and has decent paths or
steps all the way to the top.
Toilets
The only public toilets I know of in the area are at SJ 69733
10983 (N52 41.739, W002 26.958) which close daily at about 5pm. The
only alternative to that (so far as I'm aware) are most likely the
various pubs in Oakengates or St. Georges, as the local Co-op
Supermarket has no toilet inside.
Cache Details
The cache itself is a small camera film container which has only
a logbook and pencil inside, there is probaby no room for swaps,
unless they're very small.
It is located near a viewpoint on the brow of a hill, with an
amazing view of Oakengates, Ketley Bank and the surrounding area.
So do make sure to go up to see it, after finding the cache, the
view is spectacular. On a clear day, the Wrekin can be seen in the
distance. This is also, in fact, the only view from which I can
genuinly say "I can see my house from here"
This is a popular area for dogwalkers, so please be very careful
finding and hiding the cache
NOTE: Due to complaints of broken glass around the cache
location I have moved the cache now to an alternative (and
hopefully safer) location.
Other Nearby Items
As Mentioned, above, there is another cache in the area,
The Pig rails by Cachers Utd.
There's also the Wrockwardine
Wood Trig Point, for those that hunt trig points as well.
