Avenue to The Mansion Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

mafiu: I think this cache has had its day although it has had a very good innings. I dont work close by anymore so its not easy to maintain or check - I'll archive and leave the area for someone else if they wish. Happy for someone more local to check and adopt if they would like to.

Well done to everyone who found this cache - it was my longest standing one - lasting about 5 years.

Geocache Description:

Cache placed looking down an avenue of trees to "The Mansion" which all used to be in Tring Park.

Tring Park Every time I walk passed this place I think there should be a cache hidden here…. There is now. I also think that there are so many Multi and Puzzle caches in the area, what we need is a traditional as well, that you can pick off so as not to get discouraged while looking for the more complex ones. I was originally going to call this a Victorian Afternoon Stroll, then thinking what they were like, a Victorian Afternoon Snog, and had many other ideas. Then when I thought about the view from this cache, and started to research some of the History of the Mansion, I realize that this should be the emphasis and theme.

Looking back at “The Mansion” as it is shown on the OS maps down this avenue is a really wonderful view. I originally imagined Lord Rothschild setting this up when he built the mansion, but my research showed that I was thoroughly mistaken as to the history of this place. There's not much published on the web about this, but the mansion is now owned by the Arts Educational School, who have a page on their website about it’s history .It seems that the origins of the Mansion are not really known, but it is mentioned of in Charles I’s time, and a few parts of the modern building were of Christopher Wren’s design.

View FROM the Mansion It’s a pity that the A41 drives straight through this view, but the view from the footbridge away from the Mansion is also lovely, depending on the weather. Roads have to be built, so I'm not complaing about it, but just imagine what it would have been like when it wasnt there galloping up or down this avenue on horseback many years ago....

The Cache:

The cache is a 0.7 litre square clipseal box in a camo bag. When you get to the cache site you can access, remove and replace the cache without moving any of the logs, which have been here for the 2 years that I have known this place. If you have any doubt about this cache hide please refer to the clue, so as not to disturb the immediate area.

Park at the museum (N 51° 47.427 W 000° 39.724) and follow the footpath over the footbridge and up the avenue to fully take in the view and the history, or park at (N 51° 47.065 W 000° 39.699) for quicker access to the cache site. The full view of the avenue can been seen from the waypoint here (N 51° 47.071 W 000° 39.654)

For a pleasant day of caching, try all of the following in the same day:

That should keep you going for a while…
