BAD MOON RISING!!!

The average person entering Dubuque on Highway 20 / Dodge Street would not believe how the stretch of highway looked 20 years ago. Dodge Street was covered on both sides with homes and businesses. The roadway was probably only half as wide as it is today. Several streets intersected Dodge along the way and were controlled by stop signs and signals. The most hazardous for truckers was the summit of Dodge, at Grandview, where many an unlucky trucker blew his drive shaft trying to start from a steep inclined stop. The stretch of Dodge from the IA/IL Bridge to Grandview was often at the top of the State of Iowa’s “most dangerous” list for accidents. When transportation authorities started the reconstruction process, the first thing they did was buy up dozens, and dozens of homes and businesses. Gone were stalwarts like The Viking Lounge, Mister Donut, Rings Restaurant, The Dodge House Motel, a half dozen gas stations and service stations, doctors courts, a Laundromat and a late night eatery that catered to the late bar crowd…The Burger Express…but many locals will call it by it’s earlier name, Dolter’s. Nothing like a Big D burger and greazzzy fries to cap off a night of frivolous barley-pop indulgence!! *********************************************************************** Also gone were the side streets. The goal was to make this a thoroughfare. What was once dozens of stop signs and signals at the cross streets, is now a straight shot from the bridge to Devon Dr. Streets that used to meet and/or cross Dodge included, Bryant, Hill, Alpine, Nevada, Booth, Bryant, Lombard, York, St. Joes, Lombard, Fremont, Meadow, Concord, & Cherokee. A couple have survived as “right in – right out” turns from Dodge, a couple combined and formed overpasses like “Bryant-Hill” and “Fremont-Lombard” overpasses, but the majority were simple dead-ended or made into cul-de-sacs. *********************************************************************** One of the more interesting streets to meet its demise was Rising Street. This steep and narrow street rose from Dodge just east of Bryant, to Oak Street. I’m sure in its day it was the quick route to some of the large estates sitting in the Cleveland Park area. But by the end, the street was just kind of one of those oddball streets that only locals knew to use. The remnants of the street are somewhat visible from Dodge during the “green season” when the trees are full. During the winter, you can clearly see the slope of the street and the retaining walls that supported the street. Along the former street there are still wrought iron and cable “guardrails”, and at the top, the street sign still proudly proclaims the street at RISING ST. *********************************************************************** This cache is placed along the former Rising Street. It’d be easier to access from the top rather than the bottom. Parking would be along any of the City streets at the top. Cache is a standard decon container with the usual trinkets. ALL of the houses pictured below, as well as DOZENS of viable businesses have been gone for about 15 years. *********************************************************************** 600 BLK. OF THE SOUTH SIDE OF DODGE, LOOKING EAST 700 BLK. OF THE SOUTH SIDE OF DODGE, LOOKING WEST 800 BLK. OF THE SOUTH SIDE OF DODGE, LOOKING WEST…THE CACHE WOULD BE ON THE HILLSIDE TO THE RIGHT OF THE PICTURE 800 BLK. OF THE NORTH SIDE OF DODGE LOOKING WEST. DOUGIEFRESH’S WITCHES TOWER CACHE IS LOCATED ON THE HILLSIDE ABOVE THESE BUILDINGS A CLOSE UP OF A COUPLE OF THE BUILDINGS FROM THE ABOVE PICTURE. SAVORY’S TAVERN WAS A STAND UP TAVERN WITH NO ROOM FOR BAR STOOLS. A MAGIC SHOP AND DOLL HOSPITAL SAT JUST TO THE LEFT OF THE TAVERN HOW LOWER DODGE STREET LOOKS TODAY. THE FIGURE 8 PORTION TO THE LEFT IS THE BRYANT/HILL INTERCHANGE. THE GRASSY SPACES LINING BOTH SIDES OF THE HIGHWAY ARE AREAS WHERE MANY OF THE HOMES AND BUSINESSES WERE REMOVED. RISING STREET IS VISIBLE ON THE BOTTOM SIDE OF DODGE IN THE PHOTO. IT’S MIXED IN THE TREES ABOUT HALF WAY BETWEEN THE HILL/BRYANT INTERCHANGE AND THE DODGE/LOCUST INTERCHANGE TO THE RIGHT IN THE PICTURE.
