This beautiful park is is here today thanks to William J. Matheson,
a wealthy, civic-minded man who owned the land, but wanted it to be
used as a park "to preserve the wild and natural beauty". On
January 14, 1930, Dade County acquired it's first park, Matheson
Hammock. What started as 84.34 acres has grown to over 600 acres
today. In 1936, the Civilian Conservation Corps came in and built
the beautiful rock structures you'll see as you drive through this
wonderful area...a picnic shelter, park office, rock walls, and the
concession area which at night becomes the Redfish Grill. There are
nature trails that take you through mangrove swamps and hardwood
hammocks, a marina and fuel dock, wading beach and a man-made atoll
pool whose water flows in and out with the tides of Biscayne Bay.
The view of Biscayne Bay is outstanding! Cape Florida and
Stiltsville are easily visible from the atoll beach parking lot on
a clear day. Many areas of the park are free, but to access the
cache area, there is a small fee (I believe $4)if you want to drive
in. However, you can park for free in the entrance parking lot and
walk or bike ride in free of charge. At times, access to this cache
may be more difficult due to extremely high tides, but on average
it should not be a hard to get to. I've added some of our new
signature pins (thank you, Lj!)and a few trade items.
