Simon Bamberger was born in Germany in 1846 and emigrated to the
U.S when he was only 14. By the time of his death in 1926, he had
made a fortune from silver mines, built the Lagoon Resort in
Farmington, built the Bamberger Electric Railroad from Salt Lake to
Ogden, and served a term as Utah’s fourth governor.
The Bamberger Railroad served Davis County from 1892 to 1958,
when the lines were officially abandoned. If you look carefully,
you can see remnants of the railroad grade throughout Davis County,
especially in North Farmington where a good deal of fill was
required to raise the grade high enough to reach the top of Cherry
Hill. The Lagoon Resort was built by Bamberger to entice people to
ride his railroad north from Salt Lake City.
This trail is built on a section of the old Bamberger grade
through Layton. There is another cache on the south end of the
trail, One Fence, Two Fence. Be sure to visit it while you are
here!
The trail is paved and nearly level, making it a great place for
strollers, scooters and bikes with training wheels. Doggy clean-up
bags and garbage cans are available at both ends of the trail.
Cache is a medium-sized plastic rubbermaid-like container. Happy
hunting, and thanks for stopping by!
