Exploring Lower Hillsborough Wilderness Parks
Public
The LHWP is the largest regional park located in Hillsborough County. Located northeast of Tampa, east of I-75 and north of US 301, this 16,000 acre tract of undeveloped wilderness includes the Dead River, Flatwoods, Off-Road Loop, Morris Bridge, Sargeant Park, Trout Creek, Oakridge & Jefferson Equestrian Areas, all of which are managed by the Hillsborough County Parks, Recreation and Conservation Department & SWFWMD. The LHWP is an amazingly multi-faceted piece of land. In addition to its primary purpose of water storage and conservation of such ecological features as a wood stork rookery, a sawgrass marsh, a sphagnum bog and two sinkholes, the park provides numerous opportunities for the public to enjoy its natural beauty, including a 12-mile stretch of Hillsborough River available to paddlers and 60-miles of forest trails for hikers/bikers, as well as fishing and picnicking opportunities ... and of course geocaches abound! :)
