This bike ride is a favorite with our family. The
Prairie
Trail between Crystal Lake and McHenry will give you ample
opportunity to catch some long views and big sun. There are
restrooms and water available at either end of the ride. You can
start from either end, but the final location is beside the trail
in Sterne's Woods opposite the tracks (so there's no need to leave
bikes unattended or wander onto the rail line). Whispering Oaks
Park has a great playground and is close to fast food on 120/W Elm
if you didn't bring a picnic.
Benefits of bike-caching: There's always a breeze. Mosquitos
can't keep up. Ditto for ticks. Poison ivy? Not unless you fall off
- way off.
