Geocache Description:

A short walk through the Boston Hill open space park on the edge of Silver City. Requires a modest elevation climb and some rough terrain. The cache site can be reached within 20 minutes by an experienced hiker if started at the Market street/Highway 180 junction.

This cache can be approached from several access points. The access with the least amount of elevation change is found at the top of the Market street hill, near the junction of Highway 180 and Market street. Many access points from in town will get you there, however they require a fairly steep climb and I would rate them 2/3. If you are a flat lander or low lander, and not customed to our hills and altitude, let your car give you some help and drive to the west end of Market street. This will also place you close to the "720 on 180 multi-cache"
The Boston Hill area of Silver City is part of an old mining district. The site hasn't had any active mining since World War Two. Over past several decades, the old shafts and dangerous stuff has been buried and closed off. The town of Silver City has received grant money to develop a trail system suitable for mountain biking and family walks, it is planned to be finished in 2005. It is a popular mountain biking site already and many small undeveloped trails crisscross the hillsides. Some caution should be taken when approaching the old mining pits so as not to fall off a cliff. The hill is a rock collectors dream. We have found quartz, pyrite, calcite, manganese oxide crystals, fossilized clams and corals, and several other things we haven’t figured yet. It was originally mined for silver, which played out quickly. Most of the mining on the hill was for iron and manganese, which when refined together give a strong steel.
The hill can be accessed from many starting points; since it is straddled by Silver City. Many of the town’s streets end at the bottom of the hill. An official trail head starts at N32 46.049 W108 17.374. The cache is not located on a official trail and will require walking around several old mining cuts. The cache is in a Ammo can. It is well hidden. Enjoy your walk!!
