Geocache Description:

Caldbeck Mast: third tallest structure in the UK!

Almost a drive-by.

Please take your own writing implement!

Turn off the main road near Brocklebank, signposted public bridleway Faulds Brow. Parking is available adjacent to the public bridleway at N54° 46.466 W003° 05.207 (the bridleway is well surfaced in either concrete or macadam up to this point and is far smoother than many local roads!) The cache is hidden a short way on along the public bridleway which crosses the field.

The views from GZ are spectacular, not only of the masts but also of the surrounding countryside - across the Solway to Criffel, the Scottish Borders, the Pennines and the Lakeland Fells.

The Caldbeck transmitting station is a broadcasting and telecommunications facility, situated close to the village of Caldbeck, in Cumbria, England. It includes a 337 metres (1,106 ft) high guyed steel lattice mast, which is the third tallest structure in the United Kingdom.

The station was originally commissioned by the Independent Television Authority to bring ITV signals (provided by Border Television) to Northern Cumbria and South West Scotland. Constructed in 1961, it originally included a 306.6 metres (1,006ft) tall guyed steel lattice mast. However, as part of the switchover to digital only broadcasting in 2008, a brand new replacement mast was erected standing 337m tall.

The big three are: Skelton mast, Cumbria (365m); Belmont mast, Lincolnshire (351m) and Caldbeck mast (337m).

To put this in perspective One Canada Square, Canary Wharf, London (the tallest inhabited building in the UK) is a mere 235m high and the BT Tower is only 188m high.

For more information on the Skelton mast see GC27Y6T

Don't believe everything you read on Wikipedia!

Original contents are log, GC and bouncy ball. Cache is micro, but large enough for some small swaps and trackables.
