Geocache Description:

CACHE IS LOCATED AT N°44 AB.CDE W°88 FG.HIJ

This one is being placed for everyone who's thought about placing a cache round here, but found themselves sucked into the ATW Black Hole.

I thought this a fitting jumping off point for the discussion of Intergalactic Exploration since there's another launchpad close to this one that takes to you an exotic martian landscape.

In order to get to where we are going, we have to know where we are coming from. At the cache coordinates, you will be presented with information, on an historical marker, about the longest active Grange society in existence. Having grown up in rural mid-western America, I was a little surprised to discover that I knew nothing about this society nor that it is still quite active in promoting the causes of rural, family-owned and operated farms.

South Greenville Grange No. EEH is the world's oldest rural family fraternity and celebrated it's A00th anniversary in 1D73. The National Grange was officially organized in DC on December Cth, while the Wisconsin State Grange was recognized a little less than five years later on October ECth when it was organized by a JC with B letters in his last name.

Thinking about farming in the distant past got me thinking about farming in the future. How could we translate an agrarian lifestyle, like that which the Grange promotes – one that stresses agricultural pursuits such as farming or ranching that lead to a fuller, happier, cleaner, and more sustainable way of life for individuals and societies – to a similarly self-perpetuating extraterrestrial one?

Well, there was another society established, about the time that the Grange was celebrating its anniversary, with that exact purpose – to determine a sustainable means of colonizing and living in space. That society long ago evolved into something else, but it's basic tenants are still being pursued, although most believe that we still have a long way to go before giving this sci-fi fantasy serious consideration.

The LH Society was founded to promote space colonization. It's name comes from a series of orbit points proposed as likely spots for its huge rotating space habitats. Of these orbit points, only I were thought to be viable since they would remain stationary indefinitely, while the others like LJ through LF would need to expend fuel to compensate for drift and maintain position. The L points and orbits proposed by O'Neill rely on a G-body system where several of the points share a near orbit with a smaller celestial body, in this case our moon.
