Granite Sphere @ Questacon EarthCache

This cache is temporarily unavailable.

Loci612: Unfortunately the Granite Sphere has been removed & put in temporary storage to allow jackhammering as part of the renovations taking place. I have been assured by Questacon that the Granite Sphere will return, but this is likely to take roughly 6 weeks.

I understand this is very unfortunate timing with the Capital Geobash approaching, but with the Earthcache subject totally missing this is the only action that can be taken.

Geocache Description:

 Come and visit a Canberra icon; Questacon's "Granite Sphere". Learn more than a tourist would about this unique fountain and the geology behind it!


How is granite formed?
- Granite is the most common rock type on the continental land masses.
- Granite is formed deep in the earth when magma cools very slowly. So unlike basalt the minerals have plenty of time to grow which results in the crystals and mineral grains being very visible, much coarser and textured than basalt.
- Granite is 25%-35% quartz, 50%-65% feldspar and 1%-10% mica.

What is it used for?
Granite is used for bridges, tiling, monuments, bench tops, public seats and granite spheres. It can be found in some form in almost every city in the world.

Granite spheres
Granite spheres are made by sand blasting a basin in a rectangle of rock and sand blasting a perfect sphere to fit into it. Then water is pushed up to hold the sphere up. The ball can then be spun easily.


To log a find on this earthcache you must answer the following questions to be sent via message:
1). What are the 3 main colours on the granite sphere?
2). What is the weight and diameter of the sphere?
3) What is the country of origin of the sphere?
4). Explain roughly how the ball is held up?
5). Where else is this theory used? (Use an example other than Kugel fountains)
