Montaña Waynapicchu is the majestic mountain that rises approximately 305 m (1000') above the citadel of Machu Picchu and is seen in this famous photo. Its summit is situated at approximately 2,701m (8,860'). The citadel sits in a saddle between two sacred peaks: Machu Picchu Mountain, which in Quechua, the native language of the Inca Empire means old or ancient mountain, and Waynapicchu or Huayna Picchu which means young mountain. Although this mountain looks like a technical climb, it's not. There are fixed ropes much of the way and if you're moderately fit, prepared for a steep walk and don't have any vertigo or exposure issues, you won't have any problem getting to the summit. Just take your time and enjoy the unsurpassed views. It shouldn't take longer than an hour each way, but you need time to explore all the architectural vestiges.

After signing in at the caretaker's hut beside the Sacred Rock (see map) you'll soon see the trail splits. The upper trail continues directly to the summit, while the lower trail continues around the base of the mountain to the Great Cavern and the Moon Temple before climbing steeply to the summit.
There are only two entrance times to climb Waynapicchu – the first is between 7 and 8 am and the second between 10 and 11. A maximum of 200 people are allowed in each time slot and tickets cannot be purchased on site. This hike is extremely popular, so some advanced planning is necessary.
