Update May 29, 2005:The cache has been replaced. The new cache is a smallish camoed tupperware container and is about 30 feet away from the original location. The first two caches have been muggled, and there is ample evidence that this area is being visited by people who do NOT respect the fragile nature of our coastline. Many rocks have been ripped up and tossed over the cliff into the water. The original hiding crevice used to be filled with rocks and is now bare. Much of the vegetation has also been trampled. The beach below is now covered in trash. There is grafitti spray painted on the sandstone at the north end of the beach. I seriously felt a lump in my throat as I wandered the beach on my way to replace this cache. Cpl Kiwi's Boy Scout Troop was here less than 9 months ago for a beach clean up and today there is more trash than ever. I hope this does not discourage geocachers from visiting this beautiful beach.. in fact, I hope this inspires you to bring a bag and CITO the area if you do come.
The name of this cache was inspired by the stair that Frodo and Sam had to climb to reach Shelob's Lair and gain entry into Mordor. The path to this cache may remind you of that particular scene ... but no giant spiders here and the view from here is more like a view of the Elves sailing into the West rather than looking down into Mordor.
After finding the cache be sure to check out the beach... especially the caves at the north west end of the beach ... maybe Shelob lurks there! The caves will only be accessible during low tide, so you may want to schedule your visit accordingly
Update 5/29/2004: Cache is small camoed tupperware.
