Found it MartyBartfast found Bertie climbs a tree

Saturday, 17 February 2018Southern England, United Kingdom

So there I was getting my gear ready and a teenage lad & lass walks past:

"You alright mate?"

"Yes thanks, just getting ready to climb this tree."

and on they went. Anyhow as I got a few metres up I could see they'd stopped round the other side of the field and were watching through a hedge, then they walked a bit closer, but still trying to hide behind the hedge. I'm probably 7-8 metres up by now and I shouts out:

"You can come over and watch if you want"

then he gets his phone out, after a bit he shouts over

"What you doin?"
"I told you I'm climbing this tree. "
<pause>
"why?"
"It's part of a game. Are you calling the cops?"
"No."
<pause>
"What game?"
"Geocaching."
<pause>
Whats your name?
"Look I'm out of breath already and I'm not shouting my name across a field, if you want to talk to me come a bit closer. Are you sure you're not calling the cops?"
"No"

So at this point I'm a little worried, 'cos if he genuinely isn't calling the cops, who's he calling? And will I have a horde of teenagers turn up in a few minutes.

Anyway I continue up and then from another direction I see a couple of high vis jackets approaching from behind a different hedge, I shouts over to the coppers
"You need to go back down the track a bit and you'll be able to get through the hedge there"

which they do. the young lad cop says

"Were you expecting us?"
"Yes, that lad over there (points) is still on the phone to your lot"

so he goes over to have a chat to the muggle, meanwhile the young lass cop has a look on her face as if if I've got my head in a lion's mouth so I shouts down:

"You look horrified"
"Isn't it dangerous?"
"I hope not, otherwise I wouldn't be up here. Do you want me to stop climbing?"
"Can you come down for a minute while we sort everything out?"
"Well I've already climbed this far and I don't want to do it all again so I'll go up to that next branch so I can sit on it while you do your stuff"

Young lad cop comes back, still looking bemused.

"What are you going to do up the tree?"
"You see that box up there (points), I'm going up to that and there will be a log book in it"
"Geocaching!" shouts the young lass cop.

Young lad cop looks even more puzzled, she explains that she knows a few coppers who do it, but not up trees!

Anyway they then give me the OK to carry on, and they stand around at the bottom to watch, just in case any body else comes along, theyt don't want another call. I asked if they're happy for me to take a picture of them 'cos it's not every day you get caught by the cops.

When I get down they're genuinely interested in the ropes & techniques, and once I start packing my stuff away they go on their way and everybody's happy.

When I managed to extract the log it was quite wet, I scrawled my name in a space but not sure it will take do to the soggy paper, so here's a picture of the log in-situ so to speak.
