Travel near and far in North America, encouraging cachers to visit nearby Earthcaches. We try to do all the earthcaches we can find. We are fans of these little adventures as a way to see our surroundings and learn something new about them, without the pressure of having to get good grades and eat in school cafeterias.
This brass tag is like ones used at California's Sutter Gold Mine to indicate whether employees are above, or below, ground level around the mine. At the mine, a miner places a tag with his name on a board at the mine entrance when he goes underground, so those topside will know who is still in the mine at the end of the day. A variation of this system is required at all mines.
Sutter Gold Mine is also an Earthcache (GCPM4C), and, although it's not required to get credit, you can take a tour inside the mine to see how a hardrock mine works. The day we went, our grandson was especially excited because he had just done a report on silver mining in Nevada, and got an A+ on it. If you get to the gold (and wine-tasting) country in the foothills east of Sacramento, try this cache for fun.
