At Charleston South Carolina today. This stone, located in one of our major parks, commemorates where we used to hang pirates in the early 1700s. Beyond the stone is Charleston Harbor where the pirate Blackbeard held the city hostage for several days until a ransom of medical supplies were exchanged for some citizens the pirate had captured. Blackbeard's lieutenant was later captured with his crew North of Charleston and hanged in the vicinity of this stone. Prior to the hostage incident, Charlestonians sometimes traded with pirates for the Spanish goods they seized on the high seas, albeit in secret, dark places, some of which still exist today.
