During a number of my dives (Red Sea, Caribbean, Indian Ocean) I had the privilege to meet many different sharks. This includes nurse sharks, black-tip reef sharks, white-tip reef sharks, grey reef sharks, a hammerhead and a number of whale sharks. Imagine yourself standing on the back of a dive boat, just before the dive. You look down to the black surface of the water. You know that below the surface about 25 grey reef sharks are cruising, each measuring about 2 meters in length. This feels kind of exiting. Then you jump in. Descent. You are in the middle of them. They are above you, under you. Swimming toward you. You feel a mixture of fear and pure excitement. An experience I will never forget. And then the biggest of all, the whale shark. Rare to meet one of them. During my trips to the Indian Ocean I had the opportunity to swim with a whale shark six times! As they swim slow, you can keep up with them for a long time before they suddenly disappear into the deep blue. But when you are so close you can almost touch them……swimming snorkeling next to them……so big you see only just a small part of them……is an experience I will never forget.
