Trilobite was one of the first arthropods with a solid shell that it shed during growth, just like today´s crayfish. Actually, the trilobite is often compared to crayfish and in the 19th century it was nisknamed "stone crayfish".
In the Czech Republic the trilobite has becoma a symbol mainly because of the 1955 Czech movie "Journey to the Beginning of Time". Trilobites lived in the Paleozoic era - from the Cambrian to Permian - that means tens of milions of years. During that time, they didn´t stop evovlving and at the time of their greatest glory they were able to swim, climb and dig. They were omnivores, carnivores and scavengers. They had developed into hudreds of species of different shapes and sizes. The largest trilobites grew up to several feet. Today you can find them practically all over the world. Therefore the trilobite is a true symbol.
